Scott City Goes Undefeated at Own Quadrangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers began one of their busiest weeks of the season Tuesday, as they hosted a quadrangular with Goodland, Lakin and Leoti.

Scott City never trailed in their first match of the day against the Lady Indians of Leoti. They started out 3-0 in the first set, and grew their lead to 13-5. Leoti would rally on a pair of occasions, with the first one, pulling to within 15-13. The Lady Beavers would build their lead back up to seven at 20-13, only to see the Lady Indians rally one final to to 21-19. Scott City scored four of the final five points of the first set to win 25-20. The second set saw the Lady Beavers never get challenged, as they picked up from where they left off in the first set, scoring the first 13 points of the set, and built up a 16-1 lead. Leoti would have a rally to make it 17-7, but Scott City scored the final eight points of the match to cruise to a 25-7 second set win to go 1-0 on the day. The Beaver attacked well, as they had 17 kills, led by seniors Cailyn Chelemedos and Janessa Lowenthal’s five, and Kelly Wycoff’s four. Wyocff also had four aces in the match. Katie Bailey led Leoti with three kills unofficially in the match.

In their second match of the day, Scott City was challenged by a good Goodland Cowgirl squad. After Goodland scored the first point of the match, the Lady Beavers responded with six straight to take a 6-1 lead. Scott City eventually grew their lead to 14-6, but the Cowgirls would respond with a big rally. The Lady Beavers went from being up 15-8 to being down 16-15, and that’s where the set got exciting. Both teams were tied at 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 22, and 23, before Scott City was able to get the set point at 24-23. Goodland would respond with two straight to give them set point at 25-24. The teams would tie again at 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, before the Lady Beavers were able to win on their fourth set point 31-29. In the second set, Goodland led from start to finish, building leads of 6-1 and 17-7, before cruising to a 25-17 win to force a third set. The Lady Beavers were unable to get any closer than four points in that set. Scott City led the entire way in the final set, despite an early tie at one. Their lead would grow to 10 at 16-6, and Goodland would make a final push, cutting the Lady Beaver deficit to four at 19-15, but a 6-to-4 run ended the match and gave Scott City the win. Bailey Nickel led the attacking with seven kills, while Cailyn Chelemedos added six. Janessa Lowenthal finished with five service aces unofficially.

In the finale of the day, Scott City never trailed the Lakin Broncs and won in straight sets. The Lady Beavers jumped out to an 11-3 lead in set one, and cruised, building up a lead as big as 13 points at 24-11, and ended up winning 25-12. Lakin would challenge Scott City in the second set. The score would be tied up at two, before the Lady Beavers went on a 6-to-1 run. After leading 11-5, Scott City saw the Lady Broncs go on a 10-to-4 run to tie the second set at 15. That was the last time the match would see a tie, as Scott City eventually pulled away to win 25-21 and complete the sweep of the Lady Broncs. In the match, Bailey Nickel led a balanced attack with five kills, while Cailyn Chelemedos added four. Maris Griffith had four service aces.

With an undefeated day at 3-0, Scott City is now 5-1 on the season, and will travel to Oakley Thursday to face Colby, Hoxie and Oakley, followed by the Liberal Invitational Tournament Saturday.
