Lakin Wins Oakley Invitational, Scott City Third

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Lakin Broncs went undefeated throughout pool play and in their final two matches Saturday to earn the 2012 Oakley Invitational Title.

Lakin defeated Goodland, Oakley and TMP-Marian in pool play in the High School in Oakley. In the semi-finals, the Lady Broncs defeated Scott City in three sets and went on to defeat Wheatland/Grinnell in the Championship match.

Scott City went 3-2 Saturday, and finished in third place. Their opening match in pool play was another thriller with Colby. The Lady Eagles won the first set 25-22. Just like the first time the teams played September 13, Scott City won the final two sets 25-20, 25-21 to earn their second victory of the year against Colby. Wheatland/Grinnell would be the next opponent for the Lady Beavers. Scott City dominated every aspect of the first set, winning 25-12. In the second set, it looked like the Lady Beavers would run away with the set, but the Lady Thunderhawks rallied in a fury and won the last two sets 25-22, 25-16. The final match in pool play saw Scott City rolling Quinter to claim second place in Pool B with a 25-11, 25-17 victory.

In their semi final match, Scott City and Lakin would play a tight match throughout, as each set was decided by five points or less. Lakin ended up pulling away with the first set by winning 25-20. The second set saw the Lady Beavers hold off Lakin’s comeback efforts and won 25-21. In the third set, the Lady Broncs led thoughout, and held off runs by Scott City to win 25-20. Scott City went from the High School back to the Impact Center for their third place match. The Lady Beavers defeated Goodland for  a second time this year. This time, it was in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16.

With their 3-2 record on the day, Scott City improves to 13-7 on the season and will have a busy week. They will have three days of competition this week, beginning Tuesday at Holcomb in a tri-angular with Southwestern Heights, Thursday in Garden City with Dodge City, Garden City and Ulysses, and will host their invitational tournament Saturday for their final home competition of the season.
