Scott City Shuts Out Hoisington to Begin District Play

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Brenner Wells had a career high three touchdowns, and Brett O’Neil passed for two more, as the Scott City Beavers shutout the Hoisington Cardinals 36-0 to begin Class 3A District 15 play. It was Scott Ctiy’s second shutout victory in three games, and the second straight year they’ve opened district play with a shutout win. Last year, they won at Southwestern Heights 46-0.

The Beavers scored on their opening drive of the game. A 13-play, 72-yard drive in 4:54 was capped off by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Brett O’Neil to Drew Kite. O’Neil’s PAT made it 7-0 Scott City and that was the score after the first quarter.

After teams traded possessions, the Beavers were able to put together a pair of scoring drives in the second quarter. With 4:31 left before halftime, Brenner Wells finished off a drive he set up, with a two-yard plunge. An O’Neil Kick made it 14-0 Scott City. Wells set up the Beavers with a short field after picking off Hoisington Quarterback Hagan Hanzlick and taking it to the Cardinal 23. The Cardinals would fumble on their next possession, giving Scott City yet another short field. With 1:30 left in the half, Brett O’Neil would kick in a 31-yard field goal with the win behind his back to give the Beavers a 17-0 lead at the break.

Both teams would be slowed down on their first drives of the second half. Scott City would find paydirt for with 3:46 left in the third period on a one-yard run by Wells. An O’Neil kick made it 24-0 Beavers. That drive was set up by an interception returned to the Cardinal 17 yard line. After a Hoisington punt, Scott City would find their next score through the air. For the second straight week, Brett O’Neil found Dalton Buehler down the seam for a 53-yard pitch and catch to make it 30-0 with 1:59 left in the third quarter. It would remain 30-0 Beavers after three quarters.

Scott City would score one more touchdown late in the game on a 12-yard run by Brenner Wells, in which he broke through three sets of tackles on his way to the endzone to make it 36-0 with 3:08 to go. The Beavers drive was started at their own two yard line after the Scott City defense held the Cardinals on a fourth and goal.

In the game, Scott City outgained Hoisington 354-216, including a 167-44 yard advantage in the passing game. On the ground, the Beavers  outgained the Cardinals 187-172. For the game, Brett O’Neil was 9-of-16 passing for 167 yards and two passing touchdowns. Dalton Buehler was the leading receiver with 86 yards on three receptions and a score, and he also had 69 rushing yards on 18 carries. Hagan Hanzlick was the leading rusher and passer for the Cardinals. He went 5-16 for 44 yards through the air and had 74 yards rushing on 20 carries.

Scott City (7-0, 1-0 District 15) will host TMP-Marian for their final regular season home game next Friday night. The Monarchs are 2-5 after a 36-26 win over Russell in district play. Hoisington (3-4, 0-1) hosts Russell next week. The Broncos are 1-6 on the season.
