Scott City Sweeps Liberal

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the second time this season, the Scott City Beaver boys and girls were able to collect wins on the same night. The Lady Beavers snapped a seven-game skid with a  58-51 win, while the boys completed the sweep, by winning 82-67 over the Redskins.

In the first game of the night, Scott City raced out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. When it seemed like the Lady Beavers would have things under control, Liberal would race back. After Scott City built a 23-12 lead with 4:08 left in the first half, the Lady Redskins scored the final 13 points of the half to take a 25-23 at intermission. Liberal scored the first two points of the third quarter, but it was the Lady Beavers that would steal the show. A 10-0 run during a two-minute stretch of the third quarter would give Scott City the lead for good, as they led 44-37 going into the final quarter. Liberal would cut the lead to one with 4:36 remaining at 44-43, the Lady Beavers built up their lead to nine with 2:35 remaining at 54-45. The closest Liberal got was 55-51 with 1:43 remaining. Scott City (2-10) snapped a seven-game losing streak, and got a career-high 21 points from Shanaya Hoeme, while Kelly Wycoff had 18 and Janessa Lowenthal finished with 10 points. Jai Chapman led Liberal (4-9) with 21 points, while Marisol Regalado added 17.

The nightcap saw Scott City lead from start to finish, but not before being pushed by the visiting Redskins. A big first and third quarter helped propel the Beavers to their 11th win of the season. Scott City t00k a 24-14 lead after the first quarter, and a 42-32 lead at the break. In the third period, the Beavers couldn’t miss from the field, as they ended up outscoring Liberal 29-12 in the eight minutes to build up a 71-44 lead going into the final quarter. The Redskins rallied late in the game, getting as close as 13 points with under a minute to play, but the Beavers had built up enough of a cushion for the victory. Scott City (11-1) saw Drew Kite tie a career-high with 28 points, while Brett O’Neil chipped in 14 and Trey O’Neil had 13. Liberal (3-10) was led by JJ Lewis with 19 points.

Scott City and Liberal hit the road on Tuesday for league competition. The Beavers visit Hugoton, while the Redskins are in Dodge City.
