Great Bend, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – For the second time on the 2013 season, the Garden City Buffalo Basketball teams made it a sweep of the Great Bend Panthers last Friday night. The 63-49 for the Lady Buffs moved their record to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and the Buffalo boys advanced their record to 12-5 and 3-2 in the WAC with their 34-25 victory.

The Garden City girls jumped out early with a 20-4 run in the first quarter and never looked back. Great Bend made a mini run in the 2nd quarter knocking down 15 points, but the Lady Buffs kept pace and hit 13 points of their own to take a 14 point lead into the locker room at 33-19. The 2nd half was dead even with both teams scoring 30 points each and Garden City collected their 14th victory on the season at 63-49. The Lady Buffs had three players in double figures, led by sophomore Jayme Bernbeck with 19 points, junior guard Taryn Tempel dropped in 16 and senior post player Johna McClelland added 14, junior point guard Jacksennie Tornero chipped in 9 and dished out 5 assists for the game. Coach David Upton stated he was very pleased with the intensity and effort his team started the game with especially in such a tough venue as the Field House at Great Bend.

For the Buffalo boys it was just one of those games that you are glad to survive without shooting the ball well and facing a team like the Great Bend Panthers that works hard at taking your desired shot selection away. The one thing that the Buffalo boys did do well was play defense, keeping the Panther big men a bay and covering their shooters. The Buffaloes led by one after the first quarter 10-9, but went stone cold in quarter number 2 only scoring 2 points from Tristan Nanninga and the Panthers put up 7 of their own to gain a four point lead at intermission 16-12. Turn about was fair play in the third quarter, as Garden City would hold Great Bend to only 2 points and the Buffaloes threw down 9 to take a three point lead into the 4th quarter at 21-18. The 4th quarter again belonged to the Buffalo boys led by senior Bo Banner with 18 points and five each from sophomore Caleb Tramp and Tristan Nanninga to seal the Buffaloes 12th win on the season at 34-25 and push them over the .500 mark at 3-2 in WAC. Coach Jacy Holloway comments on his teams defense and suffering through a dismal shooting night, but still collecting an important road win.
