Hoisington, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t pretty. But when there is a check mark in the win column, that’s all that matters. Scott City survived and advanced to 6-1 overall, and more importantly, 1-0 in Class 3A, District 15, with a 14-0 win at Hoisington Friday night on a cold night at Elton Brown Field.

The Beavers had all but one snap in Cardinal territory in the first quarter. Two of their drives were stalled in the Hoisington red zone. On their opening drive, Scott City took it to the 18 yard line and missed a 35-yard field goal by Tim Bolle. Their second drive was a missed fourth down conversion.

In the defensive struggle, the Beavers put together the longest drive of the night by either squad. A 66-yard drive on six plays was capped off with a 19-yard pass play from Brett Meyer to Brayden Strine on third down with 58 seconds left before halftime. Bolle Missed the extra point to make it 6-0 Scott City. The Beavers had another opportunity to score before halftime. Chris Pounds recovered a backwards lateral at the Hoisington 25 yard line. Scott City was unable to take advantage of good field position, turing over the ball on downs with only four seconds left before halftime.

The second half continued to be a defensive struggle, as both teams had a hard time moving the football. Despite a low score, the game saw its excitement come late in the game. Hoisington fumbled the punt with 2:47 remaining in the game that was recovered by Scott City at the Cardinal 24 yard line. Two plays later, the Beavers would cough it up at the 22 with 1:57 left. Hoisington had all three timeouts. After picking up a first down, Scott City’s pass rush got to freshman quarterback Taylor Richter, and Sloan Baker picked off the pass, and returned it 35 yards to the Cardinal two yard line. Two plays later, Paco Banda scored from a yard out, and Brett Meyer’s quarteback bootleg scored on the two point conversion to cap the scoring with 1:11 remaining to make the final 14-0.
