Elmer Grubbs, Jr., age 82, died Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. He was born January 31, 1931 in Hopkins County, Texas, the son of Elmer & Flossie (Wesson) Grubbs. Elmer married Mary Miiller on March 27, 1951 at Lakin.

Elmer attended country schools in Hopkins County. As a teenager he was known as Cotton Top and delivered medicine to the local residents on his bicycle and helped on the family farm. He and his parents and sister performed as the Sulpher Springs Hillbillies for area dances and on the local radio station. In the late 40’s he moved to Lakin and worked for area farmers, Colorado Interstate Gas, Ford Garage, Melvin’s Repair and Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas. Then he and his wife owned and operated Grubbs Repair for 41 years. For more than 30 years, Elmer and his wife played in various bands performing at nursing homes, senior centers and numerous school and community events. In addition to music he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, gardening, fishing, hunting and playing dominoes. He was a member of St Anthony Catholic Church, Sounds Of Country, Kearny County Roadrunners, Finney County Fiddlers and Pickers and for several years served as Vice President of the Lakin Chapter of the Kansas Oldtime Fiddlers and Pickers. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son- Elmer Edward Grubbs, 1 sister- Shirley Orr & 1 brother- Nolan Wesson Grubbs.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Grubbs of their home; 4 children, Mary & Harold Lang of Overbrook, Patsy Hough of Price, Utah, Dennis Grubbs & friend Brenda Palmer of Lakin, Julie & Robbie McCombs of Lakin; daughter-in-law, Helen Grubbs of Lakin; brother, Kenneth Grubbs of Sulpher Springs, Texas; two sisters, Ralphie Harrod of Yantis, Texas, Peggy Gamblin of De Sota, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday , at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. 
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM on Monday, December 30, 2013 at St Anthony Catholic Church with Father Mike Helms officiating.
Interment: Lakin Cemetery in Lakin. 
Vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday at the St Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin. 
Memorials may be give to the Alzheimer’s Association or St Anthony Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
