Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It became official Wednesday during a public announcement at the Train Depot. The National Department of Transportation has awarded Garden City a TIGER grant of 12 million dollars for repairs to the railroad keeping the Southwest Chief running through our region.
State Representative John Doll joined other elected officials and management from BNSF and Amtrack. Dodge City Commissioner Joyce Warshaw believes this grant will keep her town connected.
State Transportation Secretary Mike King complimented Garden City for joining a coalition that sold itself.
Only 72 of 700 TIGER grant applications were accepted. So why fight so hard for train service when people typically fly? Amtrac public relations coordinator Mark Magliari says you would be surprised.
We will wrap up coverage of this story Monday.
