Eunice Mae Metcalf Smith

Eunice Mae Metcalf Smith, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas died Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses, Kansas. She was born October 6, 1932 near Junction City, Kansas at her parent’s home on Lyon’s Creek. She was the daughter of Richard Edward and Florence Edna (Janke) Kind.

Eunice was raised in Lyona, Kansas. Religion and music were important in Eunice’s childhood family home. Eunice married Charles J. “Dick” Metcalf on March 17, 1953, he preceded her in death on November 11, 1979. She married G. William “Bill” Smith on September 29, 1984, he preceded her in death on September 27, 1994. Eunice was a member of Country View Baptist Church, Ulysses, Kansas, the American Indian Relief Council, Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dodge City, Kansas, National Geographic Society, the World War II Veterans Committee, the Statue of Liberty Foundation, Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, George Washington Mount Vernon Trust, and was a life member of the Gray County and the Grant County Historical Society Museum. She was a Fashion 220 Cosmetics and Tupperware sales representative. Eunice gave much love to others and help to many.

She is survived by two sons; Thomas Metcalf and wife Lynette, Ulysses, Kansas and Charles Metcalf and wife Pam, Ulysses, Kansas, two daughters; Pamela Meile and husband Marvin, Ulysses, Kansas and Linda Metcalf, Ulysses, Kansas, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Eunice is preceded in death by one brother; Arthur Kind and two sisters; Arlene Thompson and Maxine Oesterreich.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Country View Baptist Church, Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Sam Bynum officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to Country View Baptist Church, Ulysses First United Methodist Church or Lyona Methodist Church all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
