GCHS boys qualify for state; girls qualify one

Wichita, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-Senior Alexa Hemmert finished up her third game at the 2015 6A regional bowling meet with a look of frustration.

“I thought I was done,” she said. “I thought it was over.”

Her 179 in the final frame pushed her total to 533 for the day, a number she thought wasn’t good enough to march on. Boy was she wrong. Her series score was good enough to qualify for next week’s state tournament.

“I had bowled over 600 during practice, so I don’t know what happened,” Hemmert explained. “There was so much emotion. I don’t know how I squeaked through.”

She was the only Lady Buffalo to do so; as a team, Garden City finished sixth out of 11 teams.

As for the boys, they qualified for state for a third consecutive season. Individually, Tristan Funk finished 10th overall with a 622 series. His teammate Taylor Larson was 15th after rolling a 609.

“The lanes were okay, and I though we reacted well,” Funk said afterwards.
