Hoisington leads 3-2-1A after day one; Two area wrestlers into the finals

Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–When you get to the state wrestling tournament, you can always expect some surprises along the way. Two of the top three teams that qualified for the state tournament sent 10 kids to state from last weekends regionals. Hoisington finds themselves on top of the leaderboard after the first day. The Cardinals have put three in the finals. Rossville is in second, while Norton, the two-time defending champion, is in third. Scott City is in the top 10 after the first day, sitting in eighth place. Out of 12 area wrestlers in this weekends state tournament, 11 are still alive after the first day. Two wrestlers have made the finals, and have rematches in their championship match Saturday. Scott City’s Zach Tucker made his first final, and will take on Norton’s Ryan Johnson, who has defeated Tucker in their first two meetings of the season at 106. At 138, Caleb Austin from Greeley County will go for his first state title, as he is up against three-time champion Brandon Ball from Hoxie. Ball’s lone loss of the season came to Austin at the Phillipsburg Panther Classic on February 7.

Day two of the tournament begins at 9 am Saturday.
