Hugoton Girls Go For GWAC Championship in Ulysses

Hugoton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Where were you in 1991?  For the players on the Hugoton basketball team they were not even born.  Tonight they have a chance to do something that for them is a once in a lifetime event.  Win a conference championship.

The last time they were here Hugoton won the High Plains Championship in 1991.  This time Hugoton is looking for their first ever GWAC championship.  Before they take this important step, Head Coach Andy Gillen wants to give his team a history lesson.

Final score of the game was 65-49 Ulysses.  The loss was a costly one for Hugoton who fell a game short of tying Holcomb for first place in the final GWAC standings.

The Lady Eagles (14-2, 7-0) have a lot of confidence coming in.  A three game lead in the GWAC with three to play and riding a seven game winning streak.  Tip time is 6:30 with pre-game at 6:15 on Hits 106 and westernkansasnews.com.

Following the girls game, Hugoton boys snapped a three game losing streak on Friday by handily beating Goodland 62-38.  This time they match up with Ulysses who after starting off hot at 5-2 have lost nine of their last ten.

Hugoton has won the last four in the series since losing last season’s Blue and Red championship game to Ulysses including two wins in Hugoton this year.  Head Coach Craig Szymchek hopes for the Tigers a third time is not the charm.

Eagle star forward Zach Leininger had 21 in the last matchup between the two teams.  Tip-off is at 8pm.
