Big start propels Beloit to rout of Lady Beavers

Beloit, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Going into sub-state play Monday night, the Scott City Lady Beavers had gotten off to rough starts in their last two games. Unfortunately for them in their sub-state quarterfinal game, Beloit scored the games first 16 points, and never looked back, as they advanced to the 3A Sub-State semi-final game on Thursday night with a 57-14 win.

As it has been all season, turnovers were costly early on for Scott City (3-18). In the first quarter alone, Beloit’s defense forced 10 Lady Beaver turnovers. The Lady Trojans scored 18 of the games first 20 points and led 18-2 after the first quarter. Not much changed for Beloit (18-3) in the second eight minutes, as they forced tough shots for the Lady Beavers, who fell behind 33-5 at intermission. Beloit had put up nearly twice as many shots as Scott City in the first half. The third quarter would end up being the best offensive quarter for the Lady Beavers, putting up seven points, but trailed 51-12 after three periods. A running clock was used in the final quarter, as the Lady Trojans won the scoring battle 6-2 en route to a semi-final berth on Thursday. Leading the way for Beloit was senior Shaylyn Krone with 23 points, as she was the lone double figure scorer on either team. Scott City was led by Kaitlyn Roberts with five points.

The Lady Beavers return a bulk of their scoring next year, as they lose only one senior in Samantha Garcia.

Two other 3A, Beloit Sub-State games were played Monday night. Russell took down Norton 44-29, and will face Beloit on Thursday night, while Phillipsburg defeated Hoisington 50-36. Minneapolis and Ellsworth play Tuesday night at 6, as part of a doubleheader between the Lions and Bearcats in Minneapolis.
