Top Ranked Hugoton Girls Play For Trip to State Saturday

Larned, KS (westernkansasnews.com)  The transition game was working and their outside shot was just as good.  Hugoton (18-2) used a 22-9 start and outscored host Larned (3-17) 19-5 in the second quarter in coasting to a 55-24 win during their substate first round game.

Game Highlights

For Hugoton it was their 11th straight win.  The top ranked team in the state will face Pratt (16-5) who pulled away late to beat Holcomb 64-50 in the other substate semifinal.   The Lady Greenbacks are ranked 4th in the final K-preps poll.

Hugoton saw three different players score in double figures led by Katy Heger’s 17 points.  Dallie Hoskinson had 12 and on the strength of two threes within a matter of seconds during the second quarter Amy Scott finished with 10.  Most of the starters rested in the second half to gear up for Saturday night’s substate final against Pratt.  

Larned sophomore shooting guard Haley Skelton ended the night with seven points.

For the Hugoton girls basketball team a win and they will be in state back to back years and only for the second time since the 1993 team that won the High Plains Championship.  Pre-game coverage begins at 5:45 Saturday night on Hits 106 and westernkansasnews.com. 

Following the girls, Hugoton boys will play Holcomb for the third time this year in the other substate championship.  The Eagles look for their first trip to state since 1951.
