Buffs Softball Has No Troubles in Liberal

Liberal, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It was the way you expect a team to handle their conference opener especially against a winless team.  The Garden City High School Softball team used the power of the big inning in cruising to a pair of wins opening WAC play 20-0 and 19-2 in Liberal.  Dusti Befort threw a no-hitter in game one and Abbie Dart allowed just two runs in game two.  The wins improved the Buffs to 8-0, 2-0 WAC and Liberal at 0-12, 0-4 WAC.

Game One Highlights

It was all Befort in game one.  Jordan Urban reached on an error by the pitcher Befort on a looping line drive.  Befort followed up by striking the side in the first and striking out seven of the last nine.  Not that Befort needed it, but she received plenty of offensive support.

Garden City wrapped it up with a run rule in the third inning helped out twelve runs in the second and a six run third.  Abbie Dart went 3-for-3 including a two run homer and knocked in four.  The home run was Dart’s third of the year.  Four other Buffaloes added two RBI’s each including Befort, Alyssa Long, Kaci Finch and Jenna Greenlee.  Dart and Greenlee went 3-for-3. Jordan Terrones scored four runs in the win.  Sarah Bayouth gave up twenty runs, ten earned in going the distance for the loss.

Game Two Highlights

While Befort did it on the mound in game one, in the second game she did it with the bat.  Befort’s two hits drove in five runs, Rylee Crawford had a two run single and Hayley Fowler took the loss, while Abbie Dart matched Befort with a 4-0 record to begin the season.

Another big inning helped the Buffaloes end it with a run rule in the fourth.  Thirteen batters came up to the plate and Garden City added eleven runs to beat Liberal 19-2.  Crawford had three RBI’s in game two as did Abbie Dart.

Emily Casteneda accounted for the only two runs off Dart with a single in the third.  That after Sandra Armendariz was originally called out on strikes, but after Garden City left the field, the umpire said the count was 3-2.  Armendariz walked setting up Casteneda with her two run single.
