Karlin: Cuts Will Take Toll on USD 457

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Yesterday a three judge panel in Shawnee County heard arguments from both sides in the education funding lawsuit. USD 457 Garden City schools has drawn up plans to make up a 2.2 million dollar deficit next year. Incoming Superintendent Dr. Steve Karlin will be proactive by eliminating five and a half administrative positions in the district.

Four associate principal positions are being slashed. The programs that were untouched this year will not be spared in the next school budget.

Karlin knows the latest round of cuts puts the district up against the wall.

How did we reach this point?

Even if the Shawnee County District court rules in favor of the school districts against the state in the education funding case this saga will continue. A local legislator says the state would appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court.
