Dodge City Soccer Grabs First in WAC Defeating Garden City 4-2

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It was an aggressive soccer game, one you come to expect from two rivals.  Dodge City twice had their lead cut to one, but the Red Demons pulled away to earn a 4-2 win on their home field and take a one game lead in the WAC standings over Garden City.

Dodge City sophomore Mario Martinez scored twice opening up the scoring sixteen minutes into the game and then closed out the offense with a goal a little more than twenty minutes remaining.  The big momentum swing came just two minutes before halftime, when Garden City senior Joe DePaz had a handball in assisting his goalie during Dodge City’s two on two attack of the goal.  Junior Antonio De La Torre took advantage knocking in the penalty kick shot to give Dodge City a 3-1 at half.

Garden City counted goals from junior Dat Hoang with 4:02 left first half and Isaisah Cruz for the first goal of the second half with 20:35 remaining.  In addition to Martinez’s two goals for the Demons, Rafael Yeverino  scored at 13:59 left in the first half making it 2-0 Dodge.

The Red Demons improve their record to 6-1 and 3-0 in WAC, while Garden City falls to 5-2, 2-1 in conference.  Dodge City travels to Great Bend Thursday, Garden will play Great Bend next Tuesday before a Garden-Dodge rematch a week on October 1.
