GCCC Women’s Basketball Team Wins Opener in Rout

Altus, OK (westernkansasnews.com) On a roster full of freshman one made her mark early to lead the Garden City Community College Women’s basketball team to a big 72-31 win at Western Oklahoma State in Altus, Oklahoma Wednesday night to begin the 2015-16 season.

Game Highlights

Five foot-four guard Shala Dobbins of Tulsa, scored 24 points including the first seven of the game and was constantly looking to begin the fast break as Garden City lengthened an early 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter to outscore the Pioneers 60-27 over the remaining three quarters.

DaRae Lewis added 13 point and three blocked shots for the Broncbusters.  Goddard Freshman Jenna Classen hit a buzzer beating three to end the first half and added two more threes to end the game.

Defensively GCCC was able to hold Western Oklahoma State in check as none of their players were able to score in double figures.  The Broncbusters length caused the Pioneers problems in the half court and Garden City turned a rather physical game into a blowout.

For GCCC Coach Nick Salazar despite being rough around the edges, he was pleased with the way his new look Broncbusters.

The Broncbusters do not have much time to rest up.  They play two games at the Pizza Hut Classic this weekend in Liberal beginning Friday against the University of Southwest JV and Saturday versus Gillette.  Both games begin at 2pm, pre-game show starts at 1:45 on ESPN 99.9 and westernkansasnews.com.
