Liberal, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It was a good weekend of basketball in Liberal at the Pizza Hut Classic from the Green House at Seward County Community College for both the Garden City Men’s and Women’s basketball teams.  The men hammered Peterson Air Force Base 88-43 while the women had to sweat it out in keeping their record perfect at 3-0  defeating Gillette 70-66.

In a game that saw 7 ties and 10 lead changes, the Garden City women had their chance to pull away midway through the second quarter only to see Gillette go on an 8-0 run to bring it even.  The Broncbusters (3-0) then closed out the first half outscoring the Pronghorns (2-2) 16-11, leading the game 41-37.

In the first half, Gillette shot 54 percent from the field and had three big three pointers from long range sharpshooter Tilea Reyna.  Mary Goulding also had 13 first half points in the first half, but Gillette shot 31 percent the rest of the way at 9-29 because both Goulding and Reyna were held to just three points after halftime.

Garden City shoot just 33 percent themselves at 7-21, but they always had the answer when Gillette took a lead and during the final moments of the game were able to get from a driving layup from Shala Dobbins with a little more than minute left and iced it on two Dobbins free throws with 23 seconds left making it a two possession game.

For Dobbins it was his third straight game with at least 20 points.  She was solid at the line hitting nine of ten free throws. Dominique Maxwell added 14 points her best with the Broncbusters.  Jaymie Bernbeck was two points short of getting a double-double for the second straight day finishing with 8 points and 11 rebounds.
