Eugene “Gene” Heiman

Eugene “Gene” Heiman, 84 died Sunday, December 13, 2015 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kansas. He was born May 29, 1931 in Garden City the son of Martin & Lena Marie (Strasser) Heiman.
Gene lived his entire life in the Garden City area. He attended Plymell Grade School and later attended and graduated in 1948 from Garden City High School. Gene then attended and graduated from Garden City Junior College. Gene served during the Korean War from August of 1952 to August of 1954. He served most of his time in the service at Camp Hanford, Washington. After the service he returned to Garden City. A lifetime farmer and stockman, Gene lived on the family farm for 42 years. He later moved into Garden City. Gene also was co-owner of GC Marketing for 13 years. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City; a member of the American Legion Post #9; a past Commander of the Kansas American Legion; a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus; a member of the Eagles Lodge; and the Elks Lodge #1404. Gene enjoyed traveling, visiting with people, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
On December 29, 1953, Gene married Thelma Clarine “Toke” Hoskinsonin Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include 7 children Karen Metzger of Garden City; Kathleen & husband Rick Albrecht of Wichita, Ks.; Bill & wife Janell Heiman of Garden City; Jeanne & husband Dean Kleysteuber of Garden City; Patricia & husband Ross Miller of Garden City; Jon & wife Rebecca Heiman of Garden City; and Chris & wife Traci Heiman of Garden City; a sister Dorothy Hoffman of Garden City; a brother Robert Heiman of Garden City; 22 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Raymond Heiman; and 5 sisters Irene Rome, Evelyn Rome, Loretta Keller, Margaret Ann Wasinger, and Mary Dechant.
A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2015 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 19 also at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Reginald A. Urban Presiding. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansa Army Reserve National Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to St. Dominic Catholic Church or to the Finney County Historical Society both in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
