Holcomb boys remain unbeaten; girls lose again

The Holcomb Longhorns are 4-0 after a 54-25 thrashing of the Wichita Trinity Knights on Saturday. The Longhorns have won all four games this year by double-digits.

After Trinity tied the score at 5, 2:30 into the game, Holcomb outscored the Knights 13-1 to lead 18-6 after one quarter. The Longhorns kept the pressure on, tossing in 15 second quarter points to the Knights’ 4 to lead by 23, 33-10 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Holcomb led 41-20 and the Longhorns scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter to lead by 30 with four minutes to play.

Once again Conner Van Cleave and Christian Merz led the way with 16 and 15 points respectively. No Trinity player scored in double figures. Each team committed nine turnovers.

The Longhorns head to Colby on Friday to open GWAC play before the break.

Girls

Raiders would be the appropriate mascot for the Randall, Texas, girls’ basketball team as the Raiders plundered the Holcomb Lady Longhorns for 31 turnovers and 21 points off those miscues. Randall rolled to a 67-38 win Saturday afternoon at the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic.

Holcomb continues to be plagued not just by turnovers, but also cold shooting and giving up too many offensive rebounds. The Lady Longhorns shot just 21%, 10 of 47, and 2 of 6 from 3-point range. Randall only shot 35% from the field, but thanks to offensive rebounding and Longhorn turnovers, the Raiders got 77 cracks at the basket, hitting 27 shots.

Jordan Jarnigan led the way for Holcomb with 22 points, hitting 2 treys and 8 out of 10 from the free throw line. No other Longhorn had more than 5 points.

For Holcomb it was the third straight game without starting point guard Eboni Sapien, who has been sidelined with a concussion. She is expected to practice this week and return to the lineup for Friday’s game at Colby. The Lady Longhorns are 1-3 on the season.
