Velma A. Gabel, 80, died Monday, December 21, 2015, at Tallgrass Creek Nursing Home, Overland Park, Kansas. 

She was born June 11, 1935, at Antonino, Kansas, the daughter of Andrew and Celestina (Kreutzer) Klaus. 

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and an adorer of the Perpetual Adoration at the Cathedral. 

She married Harold J. Gabel at Antonino, Kansas, on August 11, 1952. 

Survivors include: one son, Dale Gabel and wife, Carole Corley, Garden City, Kansas; four daughters, Jacqueline Randle and husband, Clarke, Stillwater, Oklahoma, Vicki Schumacher and husband, Neal, Lenexa, Kansas, Kelley Pfannenstiel, Kansas City, Missouri, DaLanna Nichols, Wamego, Kansas; two brothers, Duane Klaus and wife, Norma, Hays, Kansas, Cletus Klaus and wife, Mildred, Hays, Kansas; one sister, Rosalie Patterson and husband, Sam, Olathe, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a great grandson. 

Velma lived in many Kansas towns with her husband and children before settling down in Dodge City. She was a bookkeeper for the family business G & S Masonry, for 40 years. Velma and her husband owned Skateland Fun Center where she managed the rink from August 1984 to December 1995 when it was sold. She loved to crochet beautiful afghans for her children and grandchildren, and she enjoyed growing hybrid irises. 

Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the church, with Fr. Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Ziegler Funeral Chapel.
