Paulette Borthwick, age 64, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, March 24, 2016 at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. She was born October 12, 1951 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Don Irvin and Helen Elizabeth (Nelson) Symonds.

Paulette’s father died before she was born. She moved with her mother to Ulysses when she was young. Her mother married Wayne Lighty. Paulette grew up in Ulysses and graduated from Ulysses High School. She continued her education at Garden City Community College and graduated with a BS in Early Childhood and Family Development from Kansas University. Paulette married Larry Borthwick on March 23, 1974 in Ulysses. She enjoyed growing flowers and was an accomplished seamstress. Paulette was of noble character and had an abundance of love that she shared with many. Her love for her family was unconditional. Paulette was an advocate for special needs children and had a general love for all kids. She was a member of the Patterson Avenue Church of God, where she was the founder, director and a teacher for Bright Beginnings Pre-school. Paulette was also a member of the Southern Colorado Koinonia, United Sisterhood and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She is survived by her husband, Larry of their home; son, Scott Borthwick of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter, Amy Haaland and husband Matt of Lavina, Montana; grandson, Wyatt Haaland of Lavina, Montana; siblings, Ray Lighty of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Cheryl Dreyer of Bartow, Florida; Clifford Wayne (Joe) Lighty of Garden City, Kansas; and many family members and friends.

Paulette is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, James Lighty; and sister, Gayle Sorenson.

Memorial celebration of her life will be Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 1:30 PM at the Patterson Avenue Church of God in Ulysses with Pastor Larry Borthwick officiating. Inurnment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Compassion, Gospel for Asia, or Bright Beginnings Pre-School in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W.
