Lakin, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-His goal was clear from the start:

“It’s always been a dream of mine to coach at the 6A level,” Nate Schmitt said.

Over the weekend, he got his wish.

Schmitt will be taking over the Junction City boys basketball program, leaving Lakin after three seasons.

“I had a lot of good kids on that Lakin team, and it was hard to leave them,” Schmitt said.

During his time in Lakin, Schmitt improved his team’s win total each season. After a 10-11 campaign in year one, the Broncs followed that up with 12 and 13-win seasons over the next two years. He finished with a 35-29 overall record.

His new team is an up-and-comer.

“Everything I’ve heard about them is that they’re going to be really good,” Schmitt said. “They have a lot of potential.”

Schmitt replaces Pat Battle, who resigned back in March after five seasons.
