Scott City boys back on top at 80th Scott City Relays; Colby girls take title

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The six-day layoff from the postponement of the 80th Scott City Relays to Monday was well worth the wait. Instead of having to compete in cold, rainy conditions, a chamber of commerce type day was in store for the 15-team field. With a handful of teams unable to compete in the rescheduled meet, there was only one division instead of the two that the meet has been accustomed to.

For the first time since 2011, Scott City won the boys division meet, holding off Colby and Hugoton for the top spot, while the Colby girls continue to have a stranglehold of the Scott City relays, while Scott City was a distant second.

In the girls meet, Colby won eight of the 18 events, taking the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays, and got two gold medals from Andrea Browne in the 1600 and 3200m runs, and Brielle McKee in the 300m hurdles and long jump. Dighton’s Jordan Speer just missed a sweep in the throwing events, taking gold in the shot put and javelin, while missing first by less than a foot in the discus. Scott City’s Paige Winderlin took home the 400m dash title and also was the anchor of the winning 4x800m relay team.

As for the boys, it was a balanced meet, as Drake McRae for Scott City ended up with three golds. He swept the 110m and 300m hurdle races, and anchored the 4x100m relay team to a win. Ulysses’ Ian Rudzik took wins in the shot put and discus, and freshman Jordan Schippers from Colby also won three golds, taking the 100 and 200m dashes, and was on the 4x400m relay team.
