Scott City softball picks up doubleheader sweep of Holcomb

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With their last three doubleheaders being postponed, and not playing in two weeks, it felt like Scott City was just starting their season off on Friday in a home doubleheader with the Holcomb Lady Longhorns. The Lady Beavers didn’t let the time off effect them, as they were able to pick up a pair of GWAC wins at home, winning the first game in a run rule 15-5, and rallying to win the second game 5-4 to move above .500 on the season.

Scott City 15, Holcomb 5 Game 1 (5 1/2-plus innings)
The Lady Beavers were able to take advantage of some Holcomb errors early on, scoring three first inning runs. After the Lady Longhorns puled to within 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Scott City took off and never looked back. They batted around, and scored five runs to take a 9-3 lead, and took advantage of four Longhorn errors. Holcomb got as close as 9-5 in heading into the bottom of the sixth, when once again, the Lady Beavers batted around, as Nancy Wiebe’s RBI single finished the game off with one out in the sixth to give them their third straight win of the season. Kaitlyn Roberts went six innings to pick up the win, giving up five runs on six hits on 86 pitches. Jordan Miller and Bailey Latta had two hits apiece while Roberts and Miller drove in a pair of runs. Alex Brungardt tok the loss for Holcomb going 5 1/3 innings, giving up 15 runs on 10 hits. They had eight errors in the game. Brungardt drove in two runs and Brynna McVey had two hits and scored twice in the loss.

Scott City 5, Holcomb 4 Game 2
It was a sluggish start for Scott City in the second game. Despite not committing an error, the Lady Beavers had some mental lapses in the first inning in the field and on the bases. Holcomb put the first game behind and took a 2-1 lead after the first inning, a lead that would hold up until the fourth inning. A two-run, two-out rally by Scott City gave them their first lead, thanks to the RBI single by Madison Orr that scored Nancy Wiebe. The Lady Beavers added two runs in the fifth to expand their lead to 5-2. Holcomb battle back with a two-out, two-run rally to pull to within 5-4. While Scott City went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Longhorns did just the same in the top of the seventh, assuring a sweep for the Lady Beavers. Nicole Latta went the distance in game two for Scott City, giving up four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Krystal Appel had two hits, while Karen Hermosillo, Wiebe and Orr drove in a run each for the Lady Beavers. Molly Harrington went six innings in the loss for Holcomb, surrendering five runs on six hits. Brynna McVey and Cindy Morales each had two hits, while Taylor Sleep, Kamryn Gomez and Morales each drove in a run for the Lady Longhorns.

Scott City is 4-2 on the year, 2-2 in the GWAC, and will host Elkart on Monday, travel to Lakin on Tuesday, and host Colby next Friday for their final home games of the season. Holcomb dropped to 0-10 overall, 0-6 in league play, and will go to Goodland on Thursday.
