Karlin: Numbers Skewed For State Spending on Education

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) There are a lot of numbers to pour through, but USD 457 Superintendent Doctor Steven Karlin says a change in how money was distributed two years ago inflated Kansas to third in education spending per student all without adding a dime.

Without this maneuver Kansas would rank 27th in education spending, 800 dollars per student below national average. Karlin also attempts to blow a hole in block grants when factoring the increase in student enrollment from 2009.

Dr. Karlin on how the current model for equity works now.

Out of 286 school districts across the state here is why there is so much at stake for Western Kansas.

The legislature faces a June 30th deadline for fixing the equity problem or the State Supreme Court says they’ll close schools.
