Broncbusters show improvement in final scrimmage

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-There were moments during Saturday afternoon’s scrimmage vs. Dodge City at Broncbuster Stadium that Garden City Head Coach Jeff Sims glanced over to the administration.

“That’s the offense you hired me for isn’t it?” he said to them. The subtle nod of approval from Athletic Director John Green said it all.

While the performance was far from perfect, Garden City’s first team offense looked more like Fort Scott’s during Sims’ days back East than anything the Broncbusters ran last season.

On their first drive of the afternoon, Garden City sophomore quarterback Jayru Campbell moved the Broncbusters from their own 25 to the Dodge City 1. On first-and-goal, red shirt freshman running back Taylor Thomas appeared to cross the goal line. But after a long discussion, the officials ruled it a fumble and a Conquistadors recovery.

“We did a lot of good things on offense,” Sims said. “I was looking for alignments; I was looking for communication. We displayed all those things to be a good football team.”

Thomas ended up fumbling twice, but displayed the versatility that Sims has been boasting about during practice.

“Taylor is such a dynamic player,” Sims added. “He can do so many different things.”

As for Sims’ first-team defense, they fared pretty well. They kept Dodge City out of the end zone until late in the afternoon.
