With Watermelon Scrimmage Done, Focus Turns to West

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It is hard to make a determination on what is going well and what needs improving simply from a half hour intrasquad
scrimmage, but that is the job of the Dodge City High School Football Coaches.

Despite some confusion at times the offense led by Dawson Williams scored two touchdowns including a 30 yard run for a score, while running back Tylor Garcia added a rushing touchdown of his own during the annual Watermelon scrimmage Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Payson Hatfield a senior was involved both as a wide out and at quarterback.  The coaches are keeping both candidates sharp and their decision close at hand as preparation begins for Wichita West on Monday.

The assessment from offensive coordinator Mark Sandbo was positive in evaluating what his team did.

Although the team may lack some of the quick strike ability they had last year, tempo and utilizing their speed to keep the defense off guard will be the focus of this year’s Red Demons.

The defensive unit also was doing enough to keep the right amount of pressure on and learning what they need to do in excelling with the new defensive concepts coach has been teaching them during the last two weeks.

The goal is to be ready for Wichita West this Friday night who despite losing several key players including their senior quarterback Chaz Capps rushed for 470 yards and 7 rushing touchdowns in last year’s 48-41 win.  The good news for Dodge City Head Coach Dave Foster his teams are 5-1 in their six prior season openers with him at the helm, so he expects the players to be ready.

Kickoff Friday night is at 7pm.
