Scott City hosts Cimarron in search of first win

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been a tough two games for Scott City. Take out seven turnovers, the defense gives up only 24 points. Tonight at Darner Field in Scott City, the Beavers will try for win number one as they host the Cimarron Bluejays in a 7 pm kickoff at Darner field.

Cimarron is 1-1 on the season after a 54-0 road win at Stanton County last Friday night. Nick Ast is in his third season as the starting quarterback, and leads a team that has mostly three-year starters on their club. The Bluejays return eight starters on both sides of the ball, including their entire offensive line, from a team that went 6-4 a year ago. In their win last week, Cimarron took a 32-0 lead at the break, and Ast threw for four touchdowns, while Blake Neuschafer rushed for a couple more. The Bluejays lost their first game of the year to Holcomb 55-13.

Scott City is looking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1986. The Beavers saw a 6-6 tie turn into a 32-13 loss at Holcomb last Friday night. Three turnovers were turned into 18 points for the Longhorns, who defeated Scott City for only the second time in the series. Scott City rushed for 166 yards, led by Wyatt Hayes with 120 yards and a touchdown. The Beavers cut the deficit to 18-13 with a little over eight minutes remaining, only to see Holcomb answer back with a touchdown three plays later, and put the game away with another late touchdown. Expect some changes on the defensive side of the ball tonight with some movement of players in new positions.

Scott City has played Cimarron in each of the past two seasons in district play, with the Beavers prevailing 48-6 in the 3A, District 16 championship game last season. Scott City has also won the last five games in the series, dating back to 2010.
