Buffs shutout Derby to reach quarterfinals; Dodge wins thriller in OT

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-Starting on June 1, the realization was this: Garden City was going to be a young, up-and-coming teaming 2016. 

However; Joaquin Padilla’s team may have shown up a year early. 

Jose Herrera scored two goals as Garden City advanced to the state quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Derby. 

The Buffaloes improved to 12-6 on the year and will face off with conference-rival Dodge City on Tuesday. 

Herrera got the party started early with two goals 15 minutes into the match; the second caromed off a Derby defender and bounced into the net. 

Rene Lares added a score six minutes into the second half before Jesus Macias capped the match with a goal in the 76th minute. 

Dodge City 1, Lawrence Free State 0 (OT)

Omar Estrada scored off a deflection in overtime, as the Demons outlasted Free State at Memorial Stadium. Dodge City improved to 18-0 on the season and will host Tuesday’s quarterfinal.
