Scott City tennis qualifies doubles team to state, volleyball 3rd at home, cross country with good showing at Lakin

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Saturday was a busy day for Scott Community High athletics, as the girls tennis team wrapped up regional play in Pratt, the volleyball team hosted their own tournament, and cross country went to the Lakin Invitational.

In Pratt, the doubles team of Krystal Appel and Emma Price placed sixth overall, qualifying them for state. Of the state qualifiers, Wichita Collegiate and Wellington qualified all singles and doubles players, while Maize South qualified both singles players and a doubles team. The Class 4A State Tennis meet will take place on Friday and Saturday in Winfield.

The Scott City volleyball team placed third at their home invitational on Saturday, going 3-2. They started off the day with a sweep of Oakley 25-13, 25-9, and defeated Norton in three sets 25-15, 11-25 and 25-17. Their first match saw them drop their first one of the day, as Lakin knocked off the Lady Beavers in three sets 23-25, 25-22, 25-17. Scott City later in the day knocked off Wheatland/Grinnell for a second consecutive week 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, and fell to TMP-Marian to end the day 25-18, 25-23. TMP-Marian went 5-0 to win the tournament, and Lakin went 3-2 to finish second, winning the head to head tiebreaker over Scott City. The Lady Beavers are 18-8 on the season, and will play in Cimarron on Tuesday, taking on Wichita County and Syracuse, before competing in the GWAC tournament in Ulysses on Saturday.

For the cross country team in Lakin on Saturday, the girls team won the meet, while the boys finished third as a team. On the girls side, the girls won the meet, edging Hugoton 58-60. Individually, Makaela Stevens finished second with a time of 20:43.37, followed by Dulce Ayala in seventh (21:51.92), Trella Davis 14th (22:28.51), Paige Winderlin in 21st (23:06.91), Samantha Aguilar 22nd (23:37.70) and Kodi Rogers in 30th (23:53.42). The boys finished third as a team. Hugoton won the meet with 53 points, Stanton County was second with 58 and Scott City was third with 71 points. Jack Thomas was the highest finisher for the Beavers, finishing third with a time of 17:02.25, Conner LeBeau was 10th (18:41.21), Jess Drohman 18th (18:41.21), Austin Rios 23rd (19:01.03), Theron Tucker 27th (19:09.07); Drew Duff 36th (19:30.30) and Chance Jones finished 48th (20:02.36). The cross country team will run at the GWAC meet in Hugoton on Thursday.
