Weekend Wrap: Dodge Boys Snap Skid, Girls Play Manhattan Tough

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) All in all both the Dodge City boys and girls basketball teams gave great effort over the weekend despite going 1-3 and continuing their slide with their overall record.

The Demon boys broke an eight game losing streak with their first win since January 6th against Cimarron holding on to beat Nickerson (7-9) 56-54.  Adrian Mendoza poured in a career best with 16 points, 12 in the first half on 4 3s.  Hunter Heath eclipsed his career best 24 over Wichita North with a 25 point performance on 10 of 13 shooting.

For the Demon girls their best performance of the weekend came against #3 ranked Manhattan.  Dodge jumped out to a 13-7 lead and had a two point advantage at half 18-16 before falling 29-10 in the third and fourth quarter in losing 45-28.

What was equally impressive was the Demon girls had the halftime lead without two of their best players when Kalyn Mapel and Ashley Nelson were saddled with early foul trouble.  Mapel pulled down 11 rebounds in 18 minutes, Tia Bradshaw scored 17 in the loss.

Indians leading scorer Christianna Carr was limited to nine points on 4 of 12 shooting.

Dodge City after going 7/16 for 44 percent went only 2 of 21 shooting in the second half.

During Friday’s game Dodge City lost to Nickerson 42-36.  Madison Ontjes scored 15 on 9 of 13 from the free throw line.

Tia Bradshaw had 14 and Reiyna Cecil added 12 in the loss.  The Demons were limited to 25 % shooting while Nickerson hit 31 percent of their shots.

The Demon boys fresh off their win the previous day could not hold in there against sixth ranked Manhattan losing 61-33.  The Indians turned the ball over six times, while the Demons coughed it up 18.

Luke Saville led three different players in double figures with 13 for Manhattan and the Indians used a 23-8 run in the 3rd quarter to take a commanding lead.  Hunter Heath was the only player for Dodge in double figures with 11.

Dodge City has their last four regular season games against WAC foes.  First up a Valentine’s Day contest with Garden City from the Fieldhouse in Dodge.  Pre-game is 5:45. Girls tip at 6, guys at 7:30 on Z98 and westernkansasnews.com.
