Big Comeback Saturday; Cold Bats Sunday Lead to Split with Barton

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) What a difference a day makes.  On a cloudy day with temperatures in the 40’s, Garden City bats also cooled off following a comeback win from a 10-2 deficit in Game two Saturday, the Broncbusters failed to get a runner to third base until the second inning of game two and lost 4-0 and 4-1.

Sunday’s Game One Highlights

In game one Jarrett Seaton was in control on the mound for the Cougars notching his sixth win (6-0) and tying the league mark for most wins in a 4-0 shutout win blanking the Broncbusters for the second time this year.  The Broncbusters mustered only one extra base hit a double from Billy Clark to leadoff the second inning and four hits in the game.

Ryder Yakel (3-2) went the distance, but failed to win his third straight start for the Broncbusters.  Michael Sinks started the scoring with a RBI single, his fifth run knocked in of the weekend to make it a 1-0 game.  Dawson Pomeroy later knocked in Sinks and Brady Michel added his own RBI single as Barton scored three runs and four hits in the inning.

In the fifth, Corrigan Bartlett launched his second homer of the season capping off the scoring in the 4-0 game.

Sunday Game Two Highlights

Clint Allen was finally able to get Garden City on the board Sunday afternoon with a RBI double beyond the reach of centefielder Alan Clark bringing in Rafael Villela and giving GCCC their first lead of the day.  It was the only run allowed by Andrew Repp as he scattered seven hits to improve his mark to 2-1. 

The lead was short-lived as Barton scored twice off Garden City starting pitcher Kendrick Catron allowed a pair of RBI doubles to Michael Sinks and Corrigan Bartlett both with two outs.  Bartlett added a RBI single in the seventh and following his steal of second was brought in by Dawson Pomeroy’s RBI single off GCCC reliever Michael Dzjurgot.

Taylor Langston notched his third save sliding into the team lead in that category with Pomeroy striking out four over two innings and allowing just a one out opposite field single to Clint Allen in the ninth.

Game One Highlights

Connor Burns won his fourth consecutive start in a row improving to 5-1 in Garden City’s 4-1 win over Barton.

Burns was also helped with his own spectacular defensive play reaching out and doing a half spin fielding a comeback smash grounder in the fifth inning off Dayton Pomeroy’s bat keeping the go-ahead run at third base.

Clint Allen started the scoring for Garden City with a RBI triple in the first inning off Garrett Rogers and Billy Clark had a two run single as part of a three run bottom of the fifth to lift the Broncbusters to a three run win.

Game Two Highlights

Six days after coming back from a 10-4 deficit to beat Butler 26-11, Garden City did themselves two runs better in coming back down 10-2 to beat Barton 15-14 in 12 innings.

Alex Nielsen homered for the fifth time this season tying up the game at 13-13 in the eighth inning.  The guy who served up the homer Dayton Pomeroy nearly redeemed himself a line drive homer to right which just cleared the fence off Ray Monje giving Barton a 14-13 lead.

Aeneas Roberson would keep the Broncbuster hopes alive with a Sac-Fly in the 11th and that set the stage for the 12th inning when Alex Nielsen double to leadoff, Clint Allen walked and Billy Clark was hit by a pitch setting up Ty Barclay’s game winning Sac-fly to left one of five RBI’s in the game for the Garden City catcher.

The Broncbusters at 22-14, 10-6 in the Jayhawk West returned to the field next Saturday when they travel to Dodge City and take on the Conquistadors.  Barton (23-9, 7-5) hosts Hutch next weekend.
