Scott City volleyball starts off year with a pair of wins

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On Friday, you could say it was a lot of new’s for the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team in Oakley. They would start four new players, debut a new head coach in Shelby Kite and sport new uniforms.

What wasn’t new to the Lady Beavers was winning. Scott City started off the Shelby Kite era with a pair of wins in a triangular, hanging on against Wallace County in three sets, and sweeping Oakley to finish the night.

In their first match of the evening, Scott City cruised to a 25-11 win over the Lady Wildcats, who came in ranked No. 7 in Wednesday’s Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason poll in Class 1A, Division II. Wallace County would rally back in the second set, eventually pulling away 25-17. In the third set, it would be the Lady Beavers who opened up a big lead, only to see the Lady Wildcats claw back into the set. Ultimately, Scott City would hang on for the 25-21 win.

The Lady Beavers did not show any signs of a tight win in a short turnaround against Oakley. In fact, it was a dominating first set, jumping out to a 20-5 lead, en route to the 25-7 win. Scott City led by as many as 10 in the second set, only to see the Lady Plainsmen make one final push. After that small push late, the Lady Beavers pulled away for a 25-16 win to complete the sweep.

Oakley defeated Wallace County 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 in the first match of the day.

Scott City starts their year off at 2-0 on the season, and will next host Ulysses in a dual on Thursday, September 7.
