Holcomb sweeps home triangular

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing on their home court for the final time this year, the Holcomb Lady Longhorn volleyball team looked to close out the home portion of their schedule on a high note for eight seniors. Standing in their way were Scott City and Southwestern Heights.

After the night was over, the Lady Longhorns picked up a pair of wins, with a 25-5, 25-13 win over Southwestern Heights, and a 25-21, 25-21 sweep of Scott City. Scott City swept Southwestern Heights 26-24, 25-18.

In the first match of the evening, it was total domination by Holcomb, jumping out early and cruising to a 25-5 win. The second set went the way of the Longhorns as well. After a tight battle early on, it was Holcomb coasting to a 25-13 victory.

The middle match of the afternoon proved to be a little closer than anticipated. Southwestern Heights took advantage of some Scott City errors, and led most of the way. The Lady Beavers would find a way to close the opening set out to rally for a 26-24 win. Much like the first set, the second set would be back and forth for a while, before Scott City pulled away late for the 25-18 win.

Meeting up for the first of two matches this week, Scott City and Holcomb would be a battle that would stay close for the most part. The Lady Longhorns took a 19-13 lead, before the Lady Beavers would rally to pull to within two at 19-17. Holcomb would close on a 6-4 run and take the set 25-21. The second set went back and forth. Scott City trailed by a 19-17 score, and rallied to tie the set at 19. However, the Lady Longhorns closed the set out on a 6-2 run and completed the sweep with a 25-21 win.

Scott City and Holcomb will play in a GWAC quadrangular on Thursday in Scott City, along with Colby and Goodland.
