Scott City in second after day one of 4A State Wrestling; three in the finals

Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After day one of the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center, it could turn out to be anyone’s championship to take. Marysville leads after the first day, as they pushed in two wrestlers into Saturday’s championship matches. Scott City is in second, with four into the finals, and Frontenac is in third with two in Saturday’s finals.

In fact, just 28 points separate the first through seventh teams.

For Scott City, Justus McDaniel at 132, Kaden Wren at 138 and Wyatt Hayes at 170 are in the finals. The Beavers still have two others alive on the backside, including Theron Tucker at 145 and Kyle Sherwood at 220. Ulysses had two semi-finalists in Quentin Pauda at 106, and Juan Urbina at 138, but the dropped their matches, but are guaranteed a top six finish. Corbyn Pauda at 113, Jonathan Lara at 120, Nick Holmes at 160 Alex Corpus at 182 and Ayston Perez at 285 still remain in the tournament. Hugoton has lost one of their three, as Michael Mendonza at 152 and David Cruz at 220 remain in the field.

For the title contenders, Marysville still has all 10 wrestlers remaining, with six guaranteed to place in the top six, and four in the consolation cross-bracket round. Frontenac is guaranteed to medal four, and three others in the consolation cross-bracket round. Winfield has two guaranteed to medal, with four still in the consolation cross-bracket round. Pratt has three guaranteed to medal and five still in the consolation cross-bracket. Chanute will medal four and have four still in the consolation cross-bracket round.

Saturday’s tournament begins at 9 am. They have adjusted the schedule, due to the weather. Breaks in between rounds will be cut down, and they will wrestle the Championship, 3rd Place and 5th Place Matches at the same time, and will award medals after every four weight classes. This is due to the potential for hazardous winter winter forecasted for Saturday.
