GCCC Meats Judging Team Wins Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Intercollegiate Meats Contest

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The 2019 Garden City Community College Meats Team made history this weekend  by winning the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Intercollegiate Meats Contest for the first time in program history. GCCC Meats Judging teams have placed 2nd in the contest nine times since 2000, but had not been able to secure the win, until now.  Two GCCC teams—the Brown Team and the Gold Team—competed in the contest.

The Brown team posted the 2nd highest team score in program history as well as the all-time high team Beef Grading score.  The previous record was set in 1998.  Along with the Championship Title, the team finished as Champions in Beef Grading, Beef Judging, Total Beef, Lamb Judging and Placings. They were also 3rd in Pork Judging and Questions.

The Gold Team was 4th Overall, placing 4th in Beef Grading, Beef Judging and Total Beef, 5th in Questions, 6th in Lamb Judging and Placings and 7th in Pork Judging. The team brought home an impressive 12 trophies and 30 plaques from their winnings.

 

Brown Team Individuals Accomplishments

  • Emily Glenn (Scott City):

o    High Individual

o   Winner of a $1,000 scholarship from Food SafetyNet Services

o   1st in Beef Judging

o   2nd in Total Beef

o   3rd in Questions

o   4th in Lamb Judging

o   4th in Beef Grading

  • Dallie Metheney (Scott City):

o   2nd High Individual Overall

o   1st in Beef Grading

o   1st Total Beef

o   2nd in Questions

o   5th in Lamb Judging

  • Taylor Paxson (Medicine Lodge):

o   8th High Individual Overall

o   2nd in Placings

o   3rd in Beef Judging

o   4th in Total Beef

  • Kyle Hammond (Holcomb):

o   10th High Individual Overall

o   1st in Lamb Judging—Perfect Score (First time any GCCC student has received two perfect scores in one season)

o   3rd in Beef Grading

o   4th in Placings.

 

Gold Team Individual Accomplishments

  • Ben Bradbury (Winfield):

o   11th Overall

o   5th in Placings

o   6th in Beef Grading

  • Kaden Anthony (Satanta):

o   19th Overall

o   3rd in Placings

o   10th in Beef Grading

  • Morgan Hoskinson (Satanta):

o   27th Overall

o   7th in Lamb Judging

o   9th in Beef Judging

  • RaeAnne Blevins (Satanta):

o   30th Overall.

 

Alternates included: Marcus Archuleta (Garden City) who was 32nd overall, Riley Eisenhauer (Farnam, NE) who was 36th overall and Jenny Kreger (Kinsley) who was 38th overall.
