Dodge City gets road sweep at Ulysses

ULYSSES, Kan. — The Dodge City High School basketball teams traveled southwest to take on the Ulysses Tigers in a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday night. The Lady Demons dominated the Tigers on their way to a 51-23 victory, while the Dodge City boys won the second game of the night, 63-50.

The Lady Demons set six different records in their first meeting with Ulysses earlier this year in Dodge City and although the Red Demons wouldn’t set any new records on Tuesday, they’d get the easy road win for their third straight victory.

Dodge City fell behind 2-0 early on, but a couple of big runs would help pave the way to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter. The Red Demons kept their foot on the pedal in the second quarter, outscoring Ulysses 17-3 to go into halftime leading 34-7.

Although the Red Demons struggled to score it in the second half, they’d lead 46-14 after three quarters and issue a running clock going into the fourth and final quarter. The Red Demons picked up their 13th win of the season and saw Kisa Unruh score in double figures yet again with a game-high 16 points to pace the way.

Dodge City also shot over 40 percent from the field for their sixth consecutive game.

Next Up: Dodge City (13-4) will travel to Garden City next Tuesday (Feb. 18) for a Western Athletic Conference game at Garden City High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and can be heard on 98.1 FM, Tune In App (KSKZ) or westernkansasnews.com/z98 and can be streamed live on dchssports.com with pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on all platforms.

Dodge City jumped out to a quick start and led 17-7 after eight minutes of play and would lead 29-18 at halftime. The Red Demons took a 45-37 lead into the final quarter of play. Ulysses pulled within five, but Dodge City kept attacking the paint and drawing fouls. Four Tigers fouled out in the final quarter and with that, the Red Demons made 16-of-21 free throws in the final eight minutes of play to help lead them to their fourth win of the season.

Cooper Scheck led the way for Dodge City offensively with 20 points, knocking down six three-pointers in the game, while Johnson brought down his sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
