Ulysses 7th, Scott City 8th in Class 4A State Wrestling after first day
Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday’s Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center saw its fair share of surprises. It would be a day that four area schools, who had a combined 18 wrestlers, win at least one match to advance into Saturday, with only three area wrestlers eliminated.
Chanute advanced for wrestlers to Saturday’s finals matches, as they have a 45.5-point advantage over Marysville after the first day. The Comets brought 12 wrestlers to state, and only saw two wrestlers eliminated after opening day. Andale is just a half-point behind Marysville. The Bulldogs sent just one into the finals on Saturday, but didn’t lose anyone, and the Indians pushed four into the finals.
For area wrestlers, Ulysses was seventh after the first day and Scott City is in eighth. Both teams pushed a wrestler into Saturday’s finals. The Tigers have seven wrestlers alive, while the Beavers have six. Ayston Perez will wrestle for his first title at 285, while Scott City’s Kaden Wren is in his third consecutive state final, once again at 138 pounds.
Holcomb’s Sebastian Munoz was able to keep going after a consolation first round win, while Hugoton’s Gerardo Rubio pick up their lone consolation first round win.
Saturday’s wrestling continues with the Consolation Cross-Bracket round at 9 am.
