Dodge City girls dominate Wichita East in sub-state opener

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Dodge City High School girls basketball team punched their ticket to the 6A sub-state championship game with a 50-20 win over Wichita East on Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.

It was a sluggish start for the Lady Demons, as they led 6-4 after the first quarter, but that start would soon be forgotten. Dodge City dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Aces 19-7 to grab a 25-11 lead at halftime. That dominance carried over into the second half, as again a dominate third quarter gave the Lady Demons a 47-16 lead after three quarters and that meant for a running clock in the fourth quarter. Wichita East would outscore Dodge City 4-3 in the final quarter, but that didn’t matter after such a big lead was built up already.

Dodge City saw three players score in double figures, led by Camree Johnson’s 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kisa Unruh also had another double-figure night, going for 13 points, while senior Chidera Okoro scored 11 points and brought down five boards in her final game in the Fieldhouse. The Lady Demons shot 40 percent from the field, while holding the Blue Aces to 20 percent. Dodge City has been dominant this season on the defensive side of the court and again that carried over to Tuesday, forcing 22 turnovers and 15 steals for the Lady Demons.

The win gives Dodge City their first 17-win season since the 2015-16 season, when Dodge City finished 17-6 overall and made it to the class 6A state tournament. This is the fourth time in program history that the Lady Demons have at least had 17 wins.

OF NOTE: Kisa Unruh moved up to #4 all-time in Career Points Scored with 784. Chidera Okoro moved up to #4 all-time in Career Free Throws Made with 151, while Unruh is two spots behind her in that category with 146 made. Okoro also moved up to #5 all-time in Career Rebounds with 404.
