GCCC to Continue Online for Summer 2020

On-Campus Rate Will be Offered to All Summer Students

[Garden City, KS] April 14, 2020 – Garden City Community College will maintain its transition to online and remote course delivery through Summer 2020 and will offer all students a discounted tuition rate during this term.

Like many colleges and universities across the nation, the decision to continue online through GCCC’s summer term – May 26 through August 7, 2020 – is in direct response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Normally, GCCC students pay $150 per credit hour for online courses, which includes tuition, fees, and online textbooks.

The GCCC Board of Trustees, which met for a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, approved the discounted Summer 2020 rate for all students at $108 per credit hour.

This cost reflects a total of the per-credit-hour tuition rate ($61) and fees rate ($47) for in-state students during 2019-2020. The discount nets GCCC students a savings of $42 per credit hour.

GCCC President Dr. Ryan Ruda said he is hopeful the savings will allow students to continue working on their educational goals, while easing some of the financial burdens that students and their families are facing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, we’ve had to make many difficult decisions,” he said. “At GCCC, students are the number one priority. Through that, our goal is to make sure our students have the opportunity to progress toward degree and certificate completion without significant delays or severe financial hardship.”

In addition to taking advantage of the discounted summer rate, students can also apply for need-based scholarships for the Summer 2020 term by visiting https://www.gcccks.edu/tuition_cost/scholarships.aspx.

A unique feature that sets GCCC apart from many other institutions is that the cost of textbooks is included in its tuition/fee costs.

Through GCCC’s partnership with Cengage, students have immediate and convenient access to e-textbooks and know their costs up front.

The $108 per credit hour rate applies to all GCCC students taking summer courses, including border-state and out-of-state students. It also applies to students attending other institutions who wish to take summer classes at GCCC for transfer to their home college or university.

GCCC offers a wide variety of courses which are guaranteed by the Kansas Board of Regents to transfer to public institutions across the state. More information about these courses can be found at https://www.gcccks.edu/admissions/seamless_transfer.aspx.

All GCCC students who are currently enrolled in online summer classes and who wish to maintain their summer schedule are not required to take further action to benefit from the new summer rate

Students who wish to add, drop, or make other changes to their summer schedules, can do so by contacting their advisors directly or completing a schedule change request online. (https://gcccks.formstack.com/forms/change_of_schedule).

A small number of students negatively affected by course cancellations due to GCCC’s transition online have been contacted individually to address the student’s academic needs and his or her options for summer enrollment.

GCCC announced in mid-March that it would transitioning its Spring 2020 face-to-face classes to an online format, which commenced March 30 and continues today. All GCCC students have access to tutoring in math and writing through online video-conferencing tools available through their online Canvas learning platform.

While the GCCC campus remains closed to the public, professional staff and student and community services continue to be available through video conferencing, phone, and email.

Virtual campus visits are also available to prospective students. Fall 2020 enrollment opens April 24 for current students and April 28 for new students.
