Richard Winger Obituary

Garnand Funeral Home

Richard “Dick” Winger, age 85, died Monday, August 3, 2020, at his home in Johnson, Kansas.  He was born January 9, 1935, in Syracuse, Kansas, the son of Charles and DeEtta (Moore) Winger.

Dick grew up on a farm in Stanton County.  He began his education at Fletcher Grade School, graduated from Johnson High School, and received his Bachelor Degree in Animal Husbandry and Agronomy from Panhandle State University.  Dick married Marie Collings on June 6, 1954, in Johnson.  They raised their family on the homestead north of Johnson.  Dick farmed with his father, Charles; then his nephew, Kent Winger and later passed on his interest in the farm to his great-nephew, Travis Winger. When Dick wasn’t raising corn, wheat, and cattle, he served as a 4-H Leader, was on the Soil Conservation Board and several boards for the Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed piloting his plane and was a member of The Flying Farmers.  Later in life, he was a member of the local radio controlled airplane club.  Dick was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many.  He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, and doing electrical work.  After Dick sold his interest in the farm, he worked at Seyb-Tucker Lumber and Implement, and then for Stanton County Museum, where he enjoyed building displays and anything else asked of him.  Dick and his wife, Marie, owned and operated Beez Wings Bed and Breakfast for 11 years. While the bed and breakfast was Marie’s project, Dick enjoyed visiting with the many guests they had.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marie of their home; sons, Jeff Winger and wife Anita of Starkville, Mississippi, and Mark Winger and wife Tonya of Colby; daughters, Melodie Casey and husband Don of Johnson, Kim Tucker and husband Paul of Johnson, and Susan Johnson and husband Mike of Garden City; sisters, June Glantz of Clarkston, Washington, and Helen Dale and husband Bill of Protection; 19 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents; Charles and DeEtta Winger; son, Stacey Winger; sister, Mary Eleanor Winger; and brothers, Dale Winger and Tom Winger.
