Holcomb and Scott City renew rivalry tonight

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)—Two schools 40 minutes apart meet up tonight in Holcomb, as the Longhorns will host the Scott City Beavers in their home opener.

Both teams enter 1-0 on the year, after the Longhorns beat Cimarron 29-19, while Scott City shut out Ulysses 17-0 to open up the season last Friday night.

Scott City scored on their opening drive, and led 6-0 at the half. They would add another touchdown in the third quarter, and put the game away on a field goal late in the fourth quarter for their 17-0 victory. The Beavers forced three turnovers, all interceptions, and held the Tigers to just 112 yards of offense, while gaining around 200. Harrison King threw for 93 yards and a touchdown in the win, while Sawyer Stevens rushed for 72 yards.

Holcomb got out to a 21-8 lead at the break, en route to a 29-19 win on the road at Cimarron last Friday night. The Longhorns led 13-8 after the first quarter, and 23-8 at the break. Kaden Johnson threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while Kolby Johnson rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns, as the Longhorns finished with 192 yards of offense. The Bluejays had more yards, totaling 311, with 172 on the ground. A good chunk of the yardage came on a 65-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Scott City leads the all-time series 17-4, and they have won three straight, including twice last year. They won 14-3 on September 13, and 35-18 in the November 1 playoff game. Holcomb won three of four prior to the Beavers’ streak. It will be the 17th consecutive season that the two teams will meet up, and the 11th as GWAC members.
