Scott City and Ulysses to meet up for 66th straight meeting

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two longtime rivals meet up tonight for the 66th consecutive year, as Scott City makes the trip to Ulysses for a 7 pm kickoff at Maxwell Field. Both teams come in with many first time starters on both sides of the ball.

Scott City is coming off a 6-4 year in 2020, that saw them fall to Riley County 43-14 in the regional round of the Class 3A Playoffs. The Beavers return just four offensive starters and three defensive starters from last year. There are only seven seniors on this years squad, that returns leading rusher Jace Thomas from last year, who finished with just under 800 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns in eight games played. A year ago, the Beavers averaged 18 points and just under 300 yards per contest, their lowest outputs in the last 15 seasons. Defensively, Scott City yielded 230 yards a contest and 17 points per game. Jim Turner begins his sixth season as the Scott City head coach.

Ulysses is under new leadership, as Nick Fawcett comes to the Tigers, after a 35-3 run at St. Francis in three seasons, where he led the Indians to two consecutive state championship games. The Tigers have three returning offensive and three defensive starters from a 3-6 campaign in 2020, that saw their schedule shuffle around in the middle of the season. Ben Scott and Brennan Vagher return in the backfield for Ulysses, who averaged 12 points and 209 yards of offense a year, ago, while giving up 25 points.

This is the 74th meeting between the Beavers and Tigers, as Scott City leads the series 42-30-1. Last year, Scott City picked up a 17-0 shutout win. The last time Ulysses won in the series was in 2013, when they won 25-6.
