Scott City girls pull away from Garden City

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night was the opening night of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, as Garden City played host to Scott City on the girls side. After a first half that stayed close, the Lady Beavers would pull away in the second half, and went on to take a 48-30 win over the Lady Buffaloes at Garden City High School.

The teams would be tied six times and exchange the lead three times in the opening half. Garden City led early with the last coming at 14-14 with 1:17 left in the opening frame. They never led by more than three points early in the game. Following a 16 all score after the first period, Scott City would lead 20-16, two minutes in to the second quarter, and see the Lady Buffs tie the game at 20 with 2:32 left before halftime. The Lady Beavers closed the final two-plus minutes of the half on an 8-1 run to take a 28-21 halftime lead. Their first double digit lead came at 35-24 with 5:26 left in the third period, and led 37-26, just 40 seconds later on the heels of a 9-5 run. Scott City led 41-33 heading into the final frame, and 42-33 when a Garden City three pointer pulled them to within 42-36 with 7:15 left. The Lady Beavers would take control of the game going on an 8-1 run to lead 50-37 with 3:31 left, and scored the games final six points in the final minute to pull away late with a 58-40 win.

Brooke Strine poured in a career-best 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds unofficially in the win, while Alli Patton tied a career high with 13 points. Garden City was led by Aileen Becceril with 13 points.

With the win, Scott City leads the series 5-4 since 1982, and have won back to back games in the series for the first time since 1987 and 1988. It was also the widest margin by either side in the nine games.

Scott City improves to 2-0 on the year and will face Coronado, Colorado, who is 1-2 on the year, on Thursday. Garden City falls to 0-3 and faces Olathe North on Thursday.
