Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers played host to the Lakin Broncs in their final non-conference game on Tuesday night inside the Scott Community Events Center. The night would see a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Beavers prevailed 59-23, while the Bronc boys rallied from a halftime deficit to pick up a 73-54 win.

Lakin would push the Lady Beavers for a majority of the first quarter, and would lead 7-5 and 9-7 late in the opening period. That’s when Scott City took off and never looked back. The Lady Beavers built a 15-9 lead after the opening quarter and outscored the Lady Broncs 15-7 in the second period to take a 30-16 halftime lead. After Lakin scored the opening points of the third frame, Scott City went on a 9-2 run to lead 39-20, midway through the third quarter. The Lady Broncs would get no closer than 41-23 late in the period, as the Lady Beavers rattled off the final nine points of the quarter to lead 50-23 heading into the final frame. It turned out to be an 18-0 run by Scott City over the final 10:27 of the game, as they picked up a 59-23 victory.

Amber Latta led the way with a game-high 16 points, while Brooke Strine added 10. Lakin was led by Jara Davidson’s 10 points. 

Scott City won their seventh straight in the series, which the longest run in the series by the Lady Beavers. They now lead the all-time series 27-21. Lakin has dropped two consecutive games, while Scott City has won two in a row.

Lakin Boys 73, Scott City 54
The first half would have plenty of lead changes, but the second half would see one team shoot lights out from the floor. Overall, the lead changed 13 times and there were four ties. It would be a 12-all tie after the first quarter, and the game would go back and fourth in the second quarter for a little while. Trailing 18-17, Scott City went on a 9-0 run to lead 26-18 with 3:04 left before the break, and after the Broncs pulled to within 28-23 with 2:19 left in the second, they scored the final six points of the half to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room. Lakin hit only two three’s in the first half, and couldn’t miss in the second half. The Broncs came out firing, hitting eight trey’s in the third quarter, to outscore the Beavers 28-9 to take a 51-43 lead. Scott City got to within 51-45 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, before Lakin used an 8-0 run to lead 57-45 with 6:53 left. Another run of eight straight would push the Broncs to a 21-point lead with 4:32 left at 69-48. The teams would trade two points for two points over the final half of the quarter, as Lakin would pick up the 73-54 win. 

Servando Gonzalez led the way for Lakin with 27 points, as he scored his 1,000th point in the opening 30 seconds of the game. He came off a 40-point performance at Cimarron on Friday night, and left there at 999 career points. Allen Martinez added 24 points, while Colter Oldham scored 11, all in the second half. Scott City would get 14 points apiece from Austin Thon, Gus Hawkins and Lawson Bailey. 

Lakin has now won four straight in the series, and have also won three in a row in Scott City. The Beavers still hold a 36-15 edge in the series.
