Holcomb baseball sweeps Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The 2021 Co-GWAC champions met up Tuesday in Scott City for a GWAC doubleheader, as the Holcomb Longhorns made the trip to Scott City to face the Beavers. It would be a big day for the visitors, as they rallied to take the opening game 10-6, and pulled away late for a 14-1 win over the Beavers.

Scott City led for most of the opening game, scoring three first inning runs, and added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Holcomb would score three runs each in the next three innings and add a run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5. The Beavers scored an additional run in the seventh to make the final 10-6. Levi Knoll had two hits and drove in two runs, while Kolby Johnson had two RBI in the win. Payton Kruleski got the win, going five innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on just one hit, and recorded seven strikeouts. Race Ardery pitched the final two innings for the save. JP Harris went three-plus innings, giving up three unearned runs on one hit with five strikeouts. Lawson Bailey took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits. Zach Roberts had two hits and drove in two runs for the Beavers.

In the nightcap, Holcomb jumped out early and never looked back. They scored two runs in the first, and added five more runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Scott City pulled to within 7-1 after three innings, and the score would stay that way until the top of the fifth, when the Longhorns added a run. They added six more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 14-1 victory. Holcomb had 15 hits in the contest, as Cole Brown had three hits and drove in three runs, while Khai Kosner had two hits with two RBI. Kaden Johnson gave up a run on six hits with 12 strikeouts in six innings on the mound for the win. For Scott City, Brady Welker suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings of work. Aaron Ruelas had two hits and drove in the lone run for the Beavers.

Holcomb is 4-0 overall and in GWAC play, as they will play at TMP-Marian on Thursday, while Scott City dropped to 2-4 overall, 1-3 in league play, and will play at Lakin on Friday.
