Scott City pulls away from TMP Marian

Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–When you look at the score from Friday night’s Scott City/TMP Marian game, it’s a little deceiving how the Monarchs scored. The Beavers controlled TMP’s rushing game, and pulled away in the final quarter with a pair of touchdowns in a 28-14 win.

Scott City scored on their second series of the night, capping a six-play, 31-yard drive with a Brady Welker one-yard run with 5:17 left in the opening frame, as Aldo Munoz knocked in the extra point to give the Beavers the 7-0 lead. Just as quick as they led, TMP Marian would answer back in a hurry. On the ensuing kickoff, Kade Harris returned the kick 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at seven, with the Henry  Spano extra point.

The Beavers would score early in the second quarter to regain the lead at 14-7. A nine-play, 65-yard drive saw Welker score from a yard out, as Munoz kicked the extra point.

Scott City had two chances late in the first half to extend their lead, but failed both times. Their first came on a drive inside the Monarch 10 yard line, when TMP knocked down a pitch that they recovered. The second came after a three-and-out, when the Beavers drove to the TMP Marian 11, but were sacked without timeouts on the final play of the half, as they took a 14-7 lead into intermission.

To open the second half, both teams started out with three-and-outs. Following the second Thomas More Prep three-and-out, Scott City drove do the TMP 22 yard line. The Beavers would fumble, and Kade Harris scooped the fumble up and rumbled 74 yards to even the score at 14 with 2:47 left in the third quarter, after the Spano PAT.

The final quarter belonged to the Beavers, as they scored on their two drives they possessed the ball. A six-play, 58-yard drive saw Welker score from three yards out with 9:13 left to go up 21-4, as Munoz’ PAT just snuck across the crossbar. After another Monarch three-and-out, the Beavers went nine plays, 71 yards in 4:37. With 2:05 left, Welker’s fourth touchdown run put the nail in the coffin from a yard out to put Scott City up 28-14 with the Munoz extra point.

Scott City ended up with a season-high 335 yards of offense, with 237 on the ground. Brady Welker had 28 carries unofficially for 188 yards and four scores. Both are career-high’s. Dylan Metzger went 8-14 passing for 98 yards, as Jackson Rumford had three catches for 43 yards, and Avry Noll added 40 yards on three receptions. For the first time this year, Scott City was minus-one in the turnover department.

TMP Marian was held without a first down, and finished with minus-10 yards of offense unofficially. Kade Harris had 18 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Carson Liles was 1-5 passing for four yards with an interception. The Monarchs had minus-14 yards rushing.

Scott City has now won nine straight in the series, and now lead the all-time series with the Monarchs 17-7-1.

It’s district play from here on out for the Beavers, as they welcome 4-0 Hugoton to Darner Field next Friday night for homecoming. The Eagles took out Colby 47-6 at home on Friday night, as they are off to their best start since 2009. TMP Marian is 3-1, and will face 2-2 Russell in district play in Class 2A next Friday at home.
