Dodge City caps regular season with road win

WICHITA–Dodge City established dominance on the ground early behind Daelyn Unzueta and Isaiah Taylor, cruising their way to a 42-23 win over Wichita Southeast to wrap up the regular season Friday at Northwest Stadium.

Two first-half touchdown runs by Unzueta allowed Dodge City to sprint out to a 21-0 lead before Ronelle Slaughter ripped off a 76-yard house call to make it 21-7 at the break.

The Red Demons continued to stay true to their Wing-T roots and kept the ball on the ground almost the entire game. That proved successful as Dodge scored the first 21 points after halftime.

The final two Buffalo touchdowns came with the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter.

Dodge City’s offense was led by Austin Schulte, who was named the starter prior to Friday’s game. Kaden Garvalena is no longer a part of the team.

Friday’s game was played at Northwest Stadium due to unsafe turf conditions discovered at the newly-opened Southeast Stadium during a summer inspection. The Golden Buffaloes did not play a true home game all season.

Dodge City finishes the regular season 4-4. They earned the 11-seed in the west, and will travel to 6-2 Washburn Rural in Topeka next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner of that game will face either Haysville Campus or Garden City in the regional round of the KSHSAA playoffs.
